While Landscape Systems Garden Center is not in the business of lawn care, we recognize that a healthy lawn is an important factor in maintaining a beautiful landscape. Our resident horticulturist, Rob Haneisen, has offered his expertise – just in the nick of time. Read on and act now to prepare your lawn for spring!

What is Pre-Emergent and What Does it do For Your Lawn?

Here’s a surprising truth:

Pre-emergent does NOT kill existing weeds.

Instead, pre-emergent works by preventing weed seeds from taking root in your lawn. During winter, early spring, and fall, thousands of weed seeds travel through the air and settle into your lawn. Once temperatures warm up and days get longer, those seeds germinate and establish themselves in your lawn – unless you stop them first. That’s where pre-emergent treatments come in.

Pre-emergent creates a protective barrier in the soil that stops those seeds before they ever become visible weeds. As the primary root emerges from the seed, it comes into contact with this protective barrier and dies.

Pre-emergent does not disrupt germination but must be applied to your lawn before germination begins.

When Should I Apply Pre-Emergent in North Texas?

Timing is everything. In the DFW area, there are two critical application windows:

Spring Application – No later than February 15 – 20

This application targets weeds that germinate as soil temperatures warm in early spring. Waiting too long allows seeds to sprout—and once they do, pre-emergent won’t help.

Fall Application – No later than October 1

After months of seeds blowing around in the summer wind, many weeds begin germinating again in fall. Applying pre-emergent by October 1 helps prevent winter weeds from taking over your lawn.

✅ By February 15

• Apply pre-emergent

✅ By April 1 – First Feeding

• Fertilizer with N-P-K 20-5-5

• Supports strong top growth and early green-up

✅ By June 1 – Optional Second Feeding

If your grass looks tired or faded:

• Repeat 20-5-5, or

• Apply aluminum sulfate for a fast green-up and nutrient boost

Ever wonder why golf course fairways stay so green in summer?

Aluminum sulfate plays a big role. (Yes—even if some greens are also painted!)

✅ After September 21

• If you skipped the June feeding, apply 20-5-5 again

✅ October 1

• Apply pre-emergent for winter weeds

✅ Final Fall Feeding

• Fertilizer with N-P-K 5-5-15

• High potassium (K) strengthens roots and prepares your lawn for winter dormancy

How Much Should I Water my North Texas Lawn?

Watering correctly is just as important as fertilizing.

• Lawns need only ½ inch of water per week

• Water 2–3 times per week, not daily

• Never water at night (this encourages disease)

• Water in the early morning instead

If you’re currently splitting watering time between morning and evening (for example, 20 minutes AM + 20 minutes PM), move it all to the morning – but only about 30 minutes total per station.

Prepare Your Landscape for Freezing Temperatures

Surprise!

Our North Texas weather is at it again… One day the forecast shows weeks of mild temperatures and low precipitation, and then BAM! Storm warnings for Snow-pocalypse 2026, hitting the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex in just a few days.

This weekend has the potential to bring disruptive cold and winter weather, especially across the northern half of the state. We’ve had a few cold nights, but this system looks like it may have us below freezing for several days. Now is the time to start paying closer attention to forecasted temperatures and precipitation, reviewing weekend plans, and preparing for cold weather impacts.

What’s the difference between frost and freeze?

You may be wondering: What’s the difference between a frost, a freeze, and a hard freeze? Frost is when the temperature drops between 31 and 33 degrees Fahrenheit. Below 31 degrees is considered a freeze, and anything under 26 degrees is a hard freeze.

What does the cold weather do to my plants?

Evergreens and hardy perennials have built-in cellular, chemical, or structural adaptations or dormancy cycles to protect them from winter weather.

Cold temperatures affect the cell walls of plants, causing the water inside to expand and contract. While the plant may look fine in the morning with just a touch of white frost, the cell wall will collapse once it warms back up, causing the leaves to quickly decay. Delicate buds and petals can brown or blacken.

Popular plants in our area landscapes, such as cosmos, begonias, geranium, salvia, dahlias, zinnia, and basil, call for protection when even a light frost is in the forecast.

Quite a few North Texas favorites are tough enough to handle frost, and even a light freeze, but will suffer damage or death in a hard or prolonged freeze, requiring cover or relocation to the indoors. Included in that list are dianthus, sweet pea, miniature rose, calendula, stock, snapdragon, and rosemary.

Pansies, violets, ornamental cabbage, sedum, and sage are tougher, but still need protection in the freezing conditions that we are expecting this weekend.

How do I protect my plants from a freeze?

1. Water Plants Thoroughly Water your plants well, 24 - 48 hours before a predicted freeze. Moist soil acts as an insulator, absorbing more warmth from the sun during the day and releasing heat more slowly at night than dry soil would.

• Best Practice: Water in the morning or early afternoon so the soil can soak up sunlight before temperatures drop.

2. Move Potted Plants The easiest way to protect container plants is to relocate them to a more sheltered environment.

• Indoor Options: Move pots into a garage or shed.

• Outdoor Strategy: If you cannot move them inside, cluster them together against a south-facing wall of your house to share and trap heat.

3. Apply Thick Mulch Insulate the root zone of in-ground plants by applying 3 to 6 inches of organic mulch, such as wood chips, straw, or pine needles.

• Tip: Keep mulch a few inches away from the plant’s stem to prevent rot while still protecting the root system.

4. Use the Tent Method When covering non-portable plants, your goal is to trap heat radiating from the earth.

• Materials: Use breathable fabrics like frost cloth, old bed sheets, burlap, or blankets.

• Avoid Using Plastic: Never let plastic touch the foliage, as it can transfer freezing temperatures directly to the plant and cause "burns" to the leaves. If using plastic, place a layer of cloth underneath it.

• The Setup: Drape the cover completely to the ground and anchor the edges with bricks, rocks, or soil to seal in the warmth. Think "tents, not lollipops"— do not wrap the cloth tightly around the trunk.

Installation appointments are limited and will be booked on a first-come, first-served basis, and will be performed the day before the weather front arrives.

When should plants be uncovered?

Remove coverings soon after the temperature rises above freezing and the danger has passed. If you’ve hired Landscape Systems to cover your plants for you, the crew will return to your property when the temperatures rise above freezing to carefully remove and fold your frost coverings for future use.

Which plants need to be protected?

Plants that require freeze protection are typically those with high water content in their cells or those native to warmer climates. Prioritize protecting the following categories:

1. Tropical and Subtropical Plants These are highly sensitive to cold and can suffer damage even in a light frost.

• Flowers : Hibiscus, bougainvillea, and bird of paradise.

• Fruit Trees: Citrus (especially lemons, limes, and young saplings), bananas, and avocados.

• Foliage: Palm trees (specifically young or dwarf varieties), ferns, and elephant ears.

2. Warm-Season Vegetables and Herbs These plants will often die back completely if not covered during a freeze.

• Vegetables: Tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers, squash, and corn.

• Herbs: Basil (extremely sensitive), cilantro, and dill.

3. Tender Annual Flowers Summer flowering annuals lack the cell structure to survive freezing temperatures.

• Common varieties: Marigolds, zinnias, petunias, begonias, impatiens, and geraniums.

4. New or Young Growth Even plants that are normally cold-hardy need protection when they are young or newly planted.

• Saplings: Young fruit trees (peach, apple) and recently planted shrubs like boxwoods or azaleas.

• Established plants with new shoots: Early Spring blooms or tender new growth on roses and crepe myrtles can be damaged by late-season freezes.

5. Succulents and Container Plants

• Succulents: Most succulents have high water content in their leaves, which can freeze and cause the plant to collapse.

• Anything in a Pot: Container plants are more vulnerable because their roots are not insulated by the mass of the earth.

Plants That Generally Do Not Need Protection*

Many cool-season plants thrive in cold weather and can handle light to moderate frosts* but need covering in a hard freeze:

• Vegetables: Kale, cabbage, spinach, carrots, and onions.

• Flowers : Pansies, violas, snapdragons, and ornamental kale.

Join us on Monday, November 10th to have some fun and raise money for a great cause!

Join us for a one-of-a-kind community giveback event — “Pumpkin Smash for a Cause” — on Monday, November 10th from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Landscape Systems Garden Center's Keller Pumpkin Patch .

Each participant will have the chance to smash two pumpkins in support of the Stepping Stones Foundation of Keller. We’ll provide all the equipment — bats, goggles, plastic aprons, and of course, pumpkins! There will be food and beverage available for purchase and a RAFFLE you won't want to miss!

Come out for a morning of fun, laughter, and community spirit.

Stepping Stones Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to serving youth in crisis throughout North Texas by providing access to emergency housing, food, clothing and medical care. Once urgent needs are met, Stepping Stones offers an array of programs and services to empower the individual and instill the necessary tools for making positive life choices.

The facts about homelessness are staggering, and you might think that it isn’t happening here. But there are many children in OUR community, each day, who do not know where they will get their next meal or where they will sleep tonight. This is where Stepping Stones Foundation steps in.

Stepping Stones Foundation works directly with intervention specialists in our local schools who identify the most at-risk students who are in the “most desperate” of situations: those experiencing homelessness or lack of daily food, proper clothing, weather appropriate shoes, medical care, etc.

If you’ve been shopping with us for long, you know that we love the fall season at Landscape Systems Garden Center. The cool, crisp morning air; The migrating birds and monarch butterflies; The changing leaves; The brightly colored mums, crotons, and petunias adorning local landscapes. And of course, the PUMPKINS.

This year, we have taken our pumpkin display to another level with the full-blown Keller Pumpkin Patch, right on our property! Our team has been diligently working to build a framework of fun in our old-west style town of playhouses. We’ve been gathering truckloads of your favorite pumpkins: traditional Jacks, White Knights, Blue Dolls, Big Max Prize Winners, Lunch Ladies, Fairy Tales, Cinderellas, a variety of Gourds, and so many more!

To bring the Pumpkin Magic right to your door, we are teaming up with Porches and More , a local design group offering full-service pumpkin displays: designed, delivered, and installed. Porches and More has set up several vignettes at Landscape Systems to help you envision their designs at your own front door. We are also offering DIY packages that you can pick up in store or have delivered to your home to style yourself.

We can hardly wait to see you at the Keller Pumpkin Patch, open NOW through the month of October. Enjoy the festive fall atmosphere Monday through Saturday, 7am to 6pm. Admission is FREE. We have a bounce house and an inflatable maze for the kids. On Saturdays throughout October, Poppie’s Chop Beef food truck will be on site, serving delicious food from 9am to 3pm. Choosing the Right Location for a Japanese Maple in Your Landscape

Even the perfect variety needs the right environment to thrive in North Texas’s hot summers and heavy clay soils.

First, look for a space in your landscape that will be ideal for planting a Japanese Maple Tree. Location and soil prep are key to helping your Japanese Maple get off to a strong start.

Finding the Ideal Spot: Light, Shade, Shelter, and Soil

Morning Sun, Afternoon Shade Is Best

Japanese Maples love light, but not intense heat. In the DFW area, it’s important to give them protection from the harsh afternoon sun, which can cause leaf scorch, especially during peak summer months.

• Ideal exposure: A spot that receives dappled sunlight, or morning sun with afternoon shade, is perfect.

• If you're planting near a home or structure, try installing your tree on the east or northeast side, where it will get early light and be shielded from the brutal late-day rays.

Avoid Hot, Reflective Surfaces

Steer clear of planting too close to brick walls, fences, driveways, or stone patios, which can reflect or trap and radiate heat. These surfaces can create a microclimate that's too hot for Japanese Maples and may stress the tree, especially during our long, dry summers.

Protect from Strong Winds

Japanese Maples have delicate leaves and fine branches that can be damaged by strong gusts. Choose a spot with some natural windbreak, such as a grouping of shrubs, a fence, or a nearby tree (as long as it doesn’t block all the light).

Watch for Low-lying Areas

Avoid areas where water collects after heavy rain. While Japanese Maples like consistent moisture, soggy soil or poor drainage can lead to root rot.

If your landscape has heavy clay soil (common in DFW), consider planting in a slightly raised bed or mound to improve drainage and avoid root stress.

Planting Tips for Success

• Planting Depth: The root flare (where the trunk widens) should sit slightly above ground level.

• Soil Prep: Work organic matter into the planting hole to improve drainage and texture.

• Mulch: Apply a 2–3 inch layer, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk.

• Watering at Planting: Water thoroughly to settle the soil and eliminate air pockets.

Ongoing Care for Japanese Maples

• Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially in the first year. Avoid letting it dry completely or become soggy. Deep, slow watering is best.

• Fertilizing: Use a slow-release, low-nitrogen fertilizer in early spring. Avoid heavy feeding.

• Pruning: Minimal pruning is needed—remove dead or crossing branches in winter. For shaping, prune lightly in mid-summer.

• Protection: During extreme heat, young trees may benefit from temporary shade cloth or extra mulch.

Originally from New Zealand, Edward grew up on the wide, open plains of Canterbury, surrounded by farmland and a culture of practicality. He studied horticulture and later landscape architecture, blending a hands-on knowledge of the land with an eye for design. Over the years, Edward has worked on a wide variety of projects—from small backyard makeovers to large-scale community spaces—always with the belief that every landscape has a story.

Edward comes to us from Carrgate Design, a firm he helped create in the mid-90s with a straightforward mission: solve problems, create beauty, and treat every project as unique.
