is not in the business of lawn care, we recognize that a healthy lawn is an important factor in maintaining a beautiful landscape. Our resident horticulturist, Rob Haneisen, has offered his expertise – just in the nick of time. Read on and act now to prepare your lawn for spring!

What is Pre-Emergent and What Does it do For Your Lawn?

           Here’s a surprising truth:

Pre-emergent does NOT kill existing weeds.

Instead, pre-emergent works by preventing weed seeds from taking root in your lawn. During winter, early spring, and fall, thousands of weed seeds travel through the air and settle into your lawn. Once temperatures warm up and days get longer, those seeds germinate and establish themselves in your lawn – unless you stop them first. That’s where pre-emergent treatments come in.

Pre-emergent creates a protective barrier in the soil that stops those seeds before they ever become visible weeds. As the primary root emerges from the seed, it comes into contact with this protective barrier and dies.

Pre-emergent does not disrupt germination but must be applied to your lawn before germination begins.

When Should I Apply Pre-Emergent in North Texas?

Timing is everything. In the DFW area, there are two critical application windows:

            Spring Application

           – No later than February 15 – 20

This application targets weeds that germinate as soil temperatures warm in early spring. Waiting too long allows seeds to sprout—and once they do, pre-emergent won’t help.

            Fall Application

           – No later than October 1

After months of seeds blowing around in the summer wind, many weeds begin germinating again in fall. Applying pre-emergent by October 1 helps prevent winter weeds from taking over your lawn.

Freezing Temperatures are coming THIS WEEKEND!

Prepare Your Landscape for Freezing Temperatures

          Surprise!

Our North Texas weather is at it again… One day the forecast shows weeks of mild temperatures and low precipitation, and then BAM! Storm warnings for Snow-pocalypse 2026, hitting the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex in just a few days.

This weekend has the potential to bring disruptive cold and winter weather, especially across the northern half of the state. We’ve had a few cold nights, but this system looks like it may have us below freezing for several days. Now is the time to start paying closer attention to forecasted temperatures and precipitation, reviewing weekend plans, and preparing for cold weather impacts.

What’s the difference between frost and freeze?

You may be wondering: What’s the difference between a frost, a freeze, and a hard freeze? Frost is when the temperature drops between 31 and 33 degrees Fahrenheit. Below 31 degrees is considered a freeze, and anything under 26 degrees is a hard freeze.

What does the cold weather do to my plants?

Evergreens and hardy perennials have built-in cellular, chemical, or structural adaptations or dormancy cycles to protect them from winter weather.

Cold temperatures affect the cell walls of plants, causing the water inside to expand and contract. While the plant may look fine in the morning with just a touch of white frost, the cell wall will collapse once it warms back up, causing the leaves to quickly decay. Delicate buds and petals can brown or blacken.

Popular plants in our area landscapes, such as cosmos, begonias, geranium, salvia, dahlias, zinnia, and basil, call for protection when even a light frost is in the forecast.

Quite a few North Texas favorites are tough enough to handle frost, and even a light freeze, but will suffer damage or death in a hard or prolonged freeze, requiring cover or relocation to the indoors.

Included in that list are dianthus, sweet pea, miniature rose, calendula, stock, snapdragon, and rosemary.

Pansies, violets, ornamental cabbage, sedum, and sage are tougher, but still need protection in the freezing conditions that we are expecting this weekend.

How do I protect my plants from a freeze?

             1. Water Plants Thoroughly

Water your plants well, 24 - 48 hours before a predicted freeze. Moist soil acts as an insulator, absorbing more warmth from the sun during the day and releasing heat more slowly at night than dry soil would.

              •	Best Practice:

Water in the morning or early afternoon so the soil can soak up sunlight before temperatures drop.

             2. Move Potted Plants

The easiest way to protect container plants is to relocate them to a more sheltered environment.

              •	Indoor Options:

Move pots into a garage or shed.

              •	Outdoor Strategy:

If you cannot move them inside, cluster them together against a south-facing wall of your house to share and trap heat.

             3. Apply Thick Mulch

Insulate the root zone of in-ground plants by applying 3 to 6 inches of organic mulch, such as wood chips, straw, or pine needles.

              •	Tip:

Keep mulch a few inches away from the plant’s stem to prevent rot while still protecting the root system.

             4. Use the Tent Method

When covering non-portable plants, your goal is to trap heat radiating from the earth.

              •	Materials:

Use breathable fabrics like frost cloth, old bed sheets, burlap, or blankets.

              •	Avoid Using Plastic:

Never let plastic touch the foliage, as it can transfer freezing temperatures directly to the plant and cause "burns" to the leaves. If using plastic, place a layer of cloth underneath it.

              •	The Setup:

Drape the cover completely to the ground and anchor the edges with bricks, rocks, or soil to seal in the warmth. Think "tents, not lollipops"— do not wrap the cloth tightly around the trunk.

              •	Schedule Professional Frost Protection Service from Landscape Systems Garden Center!

Complete this form to have one of our professional landscaping crews create custom frost protection for your plants. Installation appointments are limited and will be booked on a first-come, first-served basis, and will be performed the day before the weather front arrives.

            When should plants be uncovered?

Remove coverings soon after the temperature rises above freezing and the danger has passed. If you’ve hired Landscape Systems to cover your plants for you, the crew will return to your property when the temperatures rise above freezing to carefully remove and fold your frost coverings for future use.

Which plants need to be protected?

Plants that require freeze protection are typically those with high water content in their cells or those native to warmer climates. Prioritize protecting the following categories:

             1. Tropical and Subtropical Plants

These are highly sensitive to cold and can suffer damage even in a light frost.

Even plants that are normally cold-hardy need protection when they are young or newly planted.

Young fruit trees (peach, apple) and recently planted shrubs like boxwoods or azaleas.

              •	Established plants with new shoots:

Early Spring blooms or tender new growth on roses and crepe myrtles can be damaged by late-season freezes.

             5. Succulents and Container Plants

              •	Succulents:

Most succulents have high water content in their leaves, which can freeze and cause the plant to collapse.

              •	Anything in a Pot:

Container plants are more vulnerable because their roots are not insulated by the mass of the earth.

Many cool-season plants thrive in cold weather and can handle light to moderate frosts* but need covering in a hard freeze:

The facts about homelessness are staggering, and you might think that it isn’t happening here. But there are many children in OUR community, each day, who do not know where they will get their next meal or where they will sleep tonight. This is where Stepping Stones Foundation steps in.

If you're looking to add year-round elegance and vibrant color to your landscape, Japanese Maple trees are a stunning choice. They are winter-hardy to USDA Zones 5-8, which means that they will not be hurt by the local winter temperatures.

Japanese Maples are like living sculptures—each variety offers its own shape, texture, and color palette. Choosing the right one starts with knowing what fits your style and where it will thrive in your yard.

Match the Shape and Size to Your Space

Japanese Maples come in two main growth forms, each with a distinct personality:

            Upright Varieties

These have a classic, tree-like form—great as focal points in a garden bed or as elegant accents near entryways. Most reach 10–20 feet tall.

Graceful, dome-shaped trees with arching branches that create a soft, flowing look. Usually 6–12 feet tall, ideal for smaller spaces, near ponds and water features, or in container gardens.

One of the most exciting aspects of a Japanese Maple is its ever-changing foliage color. Consider what hues you would like to see and will best compliment your landscape.

Dramatic and striking, these are great for creating contrast with green plants. Many hold their red color through the summer heat, though some turn green until autumn.

Even the perfect variety needs the right environment to thrive in North Texas’s hot summers and heavy clay soils.

First, look for a space in your landscape that will be ideal for planting a Japanese Maple Tree. Location and soil prep are key to helping your Japanese Maple get off to a strong start.

Finding the Ideal Spot: Light, Shade, Shelter, and Soil

Morning Sun, Afternoon Shade Is Best

Japanese Maples love light, but not intense heat.

In the DFW area, it’s important to give them protection from the harsh afternoon sun, which can cause leaf scorch, especially during peak summer months.

           •	Ideal exposure: A spot that receives dappled sunlight, or morning sun with afternoon shade, is perfect.

           •	If you're planting near a home or structure, try installing your tree on the east or northeast side, where it will get early light and be shielded from the brutal late-day rays.

           Avoid Hot, Reflective Surfaces

Steer clear of planting too close to brick walls, fences, driveways, or stone patios, which can reflect or trap and radiate heat. These surfaces can create a microclimate that's too hot for Japanese Maples and may stress the tree, especially during our long, dry summers.

           Protect from Strong Winds

Japanese Maples have delicate leaves and fine branches that can be damaged by strong gusts. Choose a spot with some natural windbreak, such as a grouping of shrubs, a fence, or a nearby tree (as long as it doesn’t block all the light).

           Watch for Low-lying Areas

Avoid areas where water collects after heavy rain. While Japanese Maples like consistent moisture, soggy soil or poor drainage can lead to root rot.

If your landscape has heavy clay soil (common in DFW), consider planting in a slightly raised bed or mound to improve drainage and avoid root stress.

            Fertilizing:

Use a slow-release, low-nitrogen fertilizer in early spring. Avoid heavy feeding.

            Pruning:

Minimal pruning is needed—remove dead or crossing branches in winter. For shaping, prune lightly in mid-summer.

Often referred to as the “mosquito plant,” citronella is a type of scented geranium with pink-purple flowers and lemony foliage that mosquitos dislike. When the lacy leaves are rubbed or brushed, you’ll notice the scent that sends mosquitos elsewhere. It does best in containers and bright sunlight.

            2. Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus)

This fragrant tropical grass contains citronellal, the natural oil found in many mosquito repellents. Lemongrass grows well in full sun and well-drained soil. Plant it in your seasonal borders or in large containers, which can easily be moved nearer to seating areas to keep mosquitos away from your gathering.

Catmint is a relatively easy-to-grow perennial that thrives in well-drained soil and full sun. It grows well in North Texas, tolerates heat and drought, and produces soft lavender-blue flowers that pollinators absolutely love - but mosquitoes don’t. It contains nepetalactone, an essential oil that is a strong mosquito repellent, even potentially more effective than DEET, according to some researchers.

            4. Lavender (Lavandula spp.)

A fragrant favorite, lavender’s soothing scent is pleasant to us but off-putting to mosquitoes. It thrives in full Texas sun and well-drained soil, making it perfect for beds, borders, and patio pots. Plus, it’s drought-tolerant once established.

Rosemary is a heat-loving herb with a strong scent that deters mosquitoes and other flying insects. It thrives in DFW’s dry, sunny conditions and can be planted directly in the ground or in containers. Try placing rosemary sprigs on the grill while barbecuing to release the scent and keep mosquitoes away from the chef!

A freshly cut lawn is the foundation of any outdoor party. Whether you mow it yourself or pay for a service, schedule your lawn maintenance a day or two before your outdoor party to allow the clippings to settle. If you have a pool, make sure it’s clean, functional, and safe for guests, with precautions like secure fencing and designated supervision for children. Store away any garden tools, toys, or equipment that may be out in the open. Creating a clean and orderly space makes a great first impression and allows your guests to move about easily.

           3. Clean up the Patio & Outdoor Furniture

Sweep the patio or deck to remove large debris. And while you're at it, make sure to clear any cobwebs lurking in the corners. Fences, walkways, and outdoor furniture may need some attention, too. Power washing these areas can bring life back into outdoor spaces! Wipe down windows and clean any cushions. 4. Have Plenty of Comfortable Seating

Spread-out seating areas can help prevent damage to your lawn from heavy foot traffic. Adding throw pillows will make your seating area more inviting. Use the canopy of your trees or large umbrellas to provide shade for your guests. If you don’t have a lot of seating options, it is perfectly acceptable to ask guests to bring their own lawn chairs. If rain is a concern, be prepared to move the party indoors or have a large party tent on standby.

           5. Create Ambiance with Lighting and Music

Use string lights, lanterns, or solar lights to illuminate your space as the sun goes down. This not only adds charm but also ensures safety for guests navigating your yard at night. Pay special attention to walkways, slopes, and steps.

Have a way to incorporate a subtle soundtrack. A mini sound system such as a Google Home, Alexa, or portable speaker, provides background music to fill lulls in conversation. Play your favorite music to match the vibe of your party. Whether it’s a kid’s birthday party or a casual gathering of friends, the music you choose will help set the tone.

           6. Set Up a Food and Drink Station

Food is an essential part of any gathering. Plan a menu that suits your guests' tastes and any dietary restrictions, but keep it simple enough that it isn’t a strain on your hospitality. A relaxed and pleasant host is far more important!

Designate an area for drinks and snacks, making sure it’s easily accessible. Consider using a bar cart or a dedicated table, stocked with summer essentials like iced drinks, fresh fruit, and finger foods. And don’t forget the napkins!

           7. Enjoy Your Guests and Have Fun!

You may want to set up some popular summer yard games, such as cornhole, bocce ball, or giant Jenga, to give your guests a fun way to stay entertained throughout the party. Additionally, make sure pets have a safe and comfortable space, providing shaded areas, fresh water, and a quiet spot for relaxation. If loud noises upset your pets, be sure to keep them away from fireworks and ensure they’re comforted and secure during celebrations.

With a bit of planning and preparation, you can transform your yard into a beautiful venue for summer celebrations. By focusing on comfort, ambiance, and accessibility, you’ll create a space where memories can be made all summer long. Enjoy your summer parties and happy hosting!

Last Minute Father’s Day Gifts That Dad Will LOVE

Father’s Day is THIS Sunday… What’s on your gift list?

Grill tools, tube socks, a new necktie? This Father’s Day, skip the predictable and give Dad something he’ll truly appreciate—a little help around the house, and the gift of time well spent.

Whether he’s the kind of guy who enjoys DIY projects or someone who'd happily skip them, giving the gift of time, convenience, and a little pampering can go a long way.

Landscape Systems offers home services that make perfectly thoughtful Father’s Day gifts. Contact our office to arrange any of the following services for the dad in your life. We are happy to assist you!

             1. Automotive Detailing

If your dad loves his car almost as much as he loves you, a full-service auto detailing is a slam-dunk gift. Interior shampooing, waxing, tire shine—let the pros give his ride a showroom glow while he sits back and relaxes.

             2. Window Washing

Crystal-clear windows can totally change how a home looks and feels—but most people avoid doing it themselves. Gift Dad a professional window washing and let him enjoy the view without the ladder and elbow grease.

             3. Pressure Washing Service

From the driveway to the deck, a good pressure washing can make the exterior of a home look freshly renovated. If your dad is the type who loves a sparkling clean patio or walkway, this is a simple gift that makes a big visual impact.

             4. And of course, we offer Landscaping Services!

If your dad takes pride in his yard, a professional landscaping installation is a great way to keep things looking sharp—without him lifting a finger. From a complete overhaul to a simple landscaping refresh, we are here for you! Book services like mulching, tree trimming, or planting seasonal flowers to spruce things up.

Home services are more than just tasks—they’re time-savers, stress-reducers, and elevations to daily life. Whether you book a one-time treat or purchase a gift card for flexible use, this kind of gift says, “I see how hard you work—and you deserve a break.”

This Father’s Day, give a gift that’s practical, thoughtful, and far more appreciated than another pair of slippers. Home services give Dad what he really wants: more time to enjoy the things—and people—he loves most.

Originally from New Zealand, Edward grew up on the wide, open plains of Canterbury, surrounded by farmland and a culture of practicality. He studied horticulture and later landscape architecture, blending a hands-on knowledge of the land with an eye for design. Over the years, Edward has worked on a wide variety of projects—from small backyard makeovers to large-scale community spaces—always with the belief that every landscape has a story.

Edward comes to us from Carrgate Design, a firm he helped create in the mid-90s with a straightforward mission: solve problems, create beauty, and treat every project as unique. He brings a collaborative, grounded approach to design, always open to new ideas and passionate about working closely with clients and teams to bring shared visions to life.

He believes the landscape is more than just physical elements—it’s part of what shapes who we are and how we live. That philosophy, along with his creativity and experience, makes Edward a perfect fit for our team and our clients.

Please join us in welcoming Edward to the team! We are excited for the fresh perspective and skill set that Edward brings to his new role.

Watering your tree is crucial, especially when it is newly planted. The soil should be kept consistently moist to help the roots grow deep into the ground. Depending on the climate, you might need to water your tree two to three times a week, based on our experience. Be careful not to overwater, as this could lead to root rot. A local tree nursery can often provide specific guidance on watering based on your tree species and location.

Mulching around the base of your tree is another vital care step. A mulch layer helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds that compete for nutrients. When applying mulch, ensure it's spread evenly in a circle around the tree's base, leaving a gap near the trunk to prevent rot. Given that, according to Jobber, 59% of landscaping customers come from single-family residential homes, mulching not only aids growth but also boosts the aesthetic appeal of your property, a top priority for many homeowners. If unsure about the type of mulch to use, consulting a local tree nursery is a great place to start.

Pruning is essential to maintaining a healthy structure as your tree grows. It helps eliminate dead or damaged branches, promotes air circulation, and encourages robust growth. The best time to prune is during the dormant season, typically late winter or early spring, based on our experience. Always use sharp, clean tools to make clean cuts, minimizing the risk of infection. Over time, regular pruning will contribute to a stronger, more resilient tree.

Creating a stunning yard requires more than just planting a few flowers and mowing the lawn. A professional landscape designer brings a wealth of knowledge and an artistic eye to transform ordinary outdoor spaces into breathtaking landscapes. Their expertise ensures that every element of the yard complements one another, resulting in a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing environment. How exactly does a landscape designer craft these beautiful outdoor spaces? Let's delve into the process!

           Consulting the Property Owner

The first step in creating a beautiful yard is learning about the unique aspects of the space and the homeowner's vision. A landscape designer will conduct an initial consultation to assess the property's topography, soil quality, and climate conditions. This information is crucial for selecting the right plants and materials that will thrive in the specific environment. Additionally, the designer takes into account the homeowner's preferences and lifestyle, ensuring the landscape design aligns with their needs and tastes.

           Developing a Comprehensive Plan

Next, the landscape designer will develop a comprehensive plan that outlines the placement of plants, garden structures, walkways, and other features. This phase involves a significant amount of creativity as well as technical expertise. The designer considers factors such as color schemes, texture combinations, and seasonal changes to create a dynamic and visually appealing landscape. According to LawnStarter, an online landscaping resource, well-planned and executed landscapes can improve home value by up to 15%, making this meticulous planning stage not only essential for aesthetics but also for potential financial benefits.

The landscape designer oversees the installation of plants and other elements, ensuring everything is executed according to the plan. This includes sourcing quality materials and making adjustments as needed to address any unexpected challenges.

A great landscape can transform your property and greatly increase your enjoyment of it. If you're growing tired of your current lawn and landscape, you might consider the benefits of installing a fresh landscape design. According to Jobber, nearly two-thirds of landscaping companies annually generate more than $1 million in revenue. You won't have to spend nearly that much to rework the design of your property's landscape to get a great result. Here are four benefits of a fresh landscape design.

You can add or revise an existing patio or pool deck and extend your living space to the outdoors. Brick, stone, or masonry tiles can create a very attractive and durable patio and connecting walkways that make it more enjoyable to spend time outside. You also might add an outdoor kitchen that makes grilling a breeze while entertaining friends and family. Some comfortable outdoor furniture helps make it more enjoyable to spend time outside.

           3. Ensure Proper Watering With an Irrigation System

Your new landscape will need suitable watering to ensure all your plants and the lawn get the water needed to remain healthy. Your new landscape design could include a dedicated irrigation system that automatically waters your property while delivering water where it's needed. You set the timing of your irrigation system to water at night when you are less likely to be outside and when the water is less likely to evaporate quickly.

4. Improve Your Property's Value

Installing or revising your landscape will make your home and property look a lot better from the outside. Curb appeal is a big factor in the value of your home and its property. A great landscape improves the curb appeal and boosts your property's value. You'll benefit from greater enjoyment of your property and a higher property value. If you decide to sell your home, you should get more and close the sale sooner.
